What is Diethanol Isopropanolamine (DEIPA)?

Diethanol Isopropanolamine (DEIPA) is an organic alcohol amine compound with the chemical formula C₇H₁₇NO₃, which is formed by combining an isopropanolamine group with two ethanol groups. It is colourless to light yellow transparent viscous liquid at room temperature, slightly ammonia smell, easily soluble in water and most organic solvents. Its CAS number is 6712-98-7, and it is mainly prepared by the condensation reaction between isopropanolamine and ethylene oxide.

DEIPA has the versatility of alcohol-amine compounds, and because of its unique molecular structure (containing an isopropanol group and two ethanol groups), it has outstanding performance in dispersibility, chelating and corrosion inhibition, and it is widely used in the fields of building materials, chemical industry and metal processing.

Main application areas

Construction Materials Industry
  • Cement grinding aid: As a core ingredient, DEIPA reduces grinding energy consumption by 15%-25%, while increasing the 3-day and 28-day compressive strength of cement (by 8%-20%) and improving flowability.
  • Concrete admixtures: By regulating the rate of hydration reaction, it extends setting time and reduces cracking.
Metalworking & Rust Prevention
  • Cutting/grinding fluids: act as corrosion inhibitors and pH stabilizers to prevent metal corrosion and extend tool life.
  • Surface Treatment Agents: Enhance coating uniformity in plating or phosphating processes.
Water treatment and cleaning agents
  • Boiler water treatment: chelate calcium and magnesium ions to prevent scaling and enhance heat exchange efficiency.
  • Industrial cleaners: Enhance decontamination ability, especially effective for grease and metal oxides.
Other fields
  • Oilfield chemicals: used in drilling fluids to stabilize clay and inhibit corrosion.
  • Textile auxiliaries: used as dye dispersant to enhance dyeing uniformity.

Core strengths

  1. Targeted Performance
In the cement industry, DEIPA demonstrates superior calcium ion (Ca²⁺) chelation efficiency compared to TIPA, delivering more pronounced grinding-aid effects.

  2. Broad Process Compatibility
Exhibits excellent compatibility with inorganic salts, surfactants, and other additives, enabling flexible use in complex formulations.

  3. Long-term Stability
Maintains activity across a wide pH range (6-12), ensuring reliable performance in diverse industrial environments.

  4. High Safety Profile
Heavy metal-free formulation with low risks to operators and the environment.

Usage Guidelines & Storage

  • Recommended Dosage:

    • Cement grinding aids: 0.01%-0.03% (by cement mass)

    • Metalworking fluids: 0.1%-1.0%

  • Storage Conditions:
Store in a sealed container away from light, in a cool and well-ventilated area. Keep separate from strong oxidizers.
    Shelf life: 24 months.

  • Safety Precautions:
Wear protective gloves and goggles during operation. In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
